Could I come with? Roadtrip, with your dog

It is finally the start of summer, and it seems everyone is itching to leave their homes to explore and just go away and have some rest and relaxation. Roadtrip, with the dog?

We used to just be able to plan out where to go and pack our suitcases and grab the kids and go but this time we have a furry companion to take with us.

Traveling with a dog on a road trip can have its challenges, but with proper planning and preparation, it can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Not everyone has the luxury to leave their pet at the doggy hotel or lucky enough to have a pet sitter when away. So, here are some tips and planning essentials we’ve learned since taking our dog on a 2 week-long car trip across the States last year.

Essential items and practical advice to ensure a smooth and enjoyable adventure for both you and your furry friend!

Safety and comfort

  1. Never ever leave your pet unattended in a locked car with the window up. Don’t do it with kids and don’t do it with pets. It is extremely dangerous and life threatening.
  • Be proactive and take turns with your traveling partner watching the dog while you go into the store or running an errand.
  • Use Pet-Friendly Establishments: Look for pet-friendly places where you can bring your dog along, such as pet-friendly hotels, outdoor cafes, or parks. This way, you can include your dog in your outings without the need to leave them in the car.
  • Use Drive-Through Services: Whenever possible, utilize drive-through services or curbside pickups for your needs.
  • Educate others and spread awareness about the dangers of leaving dogs in cars by educating friends, family, and the community.

2. Ensuring your dog’s safety and comfort during the journey is crucial. This includes proper restraint using a harness or seat belt attachment, providing a comfortable space with bedding or a crate, and keeping the car well-ventilated.

3. Bathroom Breaks: Dogs will need regular bathroom breaks, exercise, and stretching their legs. Plan for frequent stops along your route to allow your dog to relieve themselves and get some exercise. Research pet-friendly rest areas or parks along the way.

4. Motion Sickness: Some dogs may experience motion sickness during car rides. Speak to your veterinarian about potential remedies or medications to help alleviate their symptoms. It’s also advisable to avoid feeding your dog a large meal before the trip.

Is your hotel pet-friendly?

5. Planning Pet-Friendly Accommodations: Not all accommodations are pet-friendly, so it’s essential to plan and book in advance. Look for hotels, rentals, or campsites that welcome pets and ensure their policies align with your needs.

When you are planning your trip call the hotels or places you are staying at to be sure they are pet friendly. Be aware that some hotels charge fees and may have specific rooms for people with pets (no carpet).

Here are some of the hotels we stayed at which had pet accommodations.

Don’t forget the dog food

6. Health and Hydration: Pack enough food, treats, and water for your dog during the trip. Keep their health records, medications, and vaccinations up to date. Carry a pet first-aid kit for any minor emergencies that may arise.

I want your Ice cream

Does your dog like ice cream but you don’t want to give the added sugar and lactose? There’s a product that is lactose free with no added sugar and made from carob which is safe for dogs. You have to mix it with warm water and stick it in the freezer for 8 hours before you travel. That is one snack a dog would appreciate!

7. Anxiety or Stress: Traveling can be stressful for dogs, especially if they are not accustomed to car rides or new environments. Gradually acclimate your dog to the car by taking short practice drives before the trip. Consider using calming products, such as pheromone sprays or anxiety wraps, and provide familiar items like blankets or toys to provide comfort.

By addressing these potential challenges and taking the necessary precautions, you can make your road trip with your dog a smoother and more enjoyable experience for both of you.

Remember, it’s always better to be safe and considerate when it comes to your dog’s welfare.
